It’s Release Day for Let’s Go Out!

Writing the Let’s Connect books has been all kinds of fun. I always wanted to try an online dating story and the format felt perfect for a newsletter serial. What I didn’t expect was Robin. Trevor was always a part of the outline for the first book, Let’s Connect. Trevor was supposed to be Robin. But only for the first couple of chapters. That was when I decided to drop the ruse and let Robin be Robin—because he definitely wasn’t Trevor. Also, I liked Robin. I also sensed Robin had a story to tell; one that wouldn’t play out across the pages of that book. Robin needed a book all to himself.

I put a piece of myself into all of my characters. A quirk, a foible, a dream, a curious habit. I don’t know if other writers do it that way, but it’s how it works for me. Sometimes I feel like the purpose of a character is to explore that facet of myself. They always develop into their own people, though. They become my friends.

Let’s Connect is available for preorder!

I wrote Let’s Connect for my newsletter subscribers. They’re an awesome bunch who keep opening emails from me, even when all I have to share is how much writing I haven’t been doing. I wanted to give them something new to read, something fun. So I decided to write a serial about the dating adventures of a 50-year-old book shop owner.

As an experiment, I’d call it a success. The response from my newsletter audience and reader group folks was super positive–and that was almost the best part. A weekly affirmation that, yes, I’ve still got what it takes to write something fun and coherent. With much of our lives being devoted to or deferred by the pandemic, it was lovely to be able to deliver and receive something light and fun.

It seemed only right that I make Let’s Connect available in a single edition for everyone else!

Thee books, Three Happy Ever Afters

My This Time Forever series is currently free to read for Kindle Unlimited subscribers!

Each of these books features a different couple and can be read alone, but the characters all know each other, and I check in with everyone in each book, building a small community around family–the ones we’re born to and the ones we find, friends–old and new, and the communities that bind everyone together.

(Also, if you start at the beginning, you’ll get Brian’s complete story and everyone tells me they like Brian’s book, Chasing Forever, best. Me? I like ’em all.) Continue reading “Thee books, Three Happy Ever Afters”

Frank and Tom Are Getting Married!

If you’re a newsletter subscriber, you’ll definitely want to make sure you open this month’s edition! I’ve written an epilogue story for the This Time Forever series, imaginatively titled “This Time Forever.” It’s pretty much fluff, which is what most of the in-between stories I write for my characters are. But for as much as I wanted to revisit all the main characters from the series, I figured my readers might like to too, so I plotted a gentle arc around Frank and Tom’s wedding.

It’s a beautiful day, everyone is there, including Charlie’s daughter and grandaughter, Brian’s nephew, Tom’s long-suffering ex-girlfriend, Frank’s sister, and a few extras. The only character I’d like to have included but couldn’t come up with a reasonable excuse to was Arthur Beckwith. I still have vague plans to send him to a senior singles resort in Florida, though. (He’d be inspired by Frank’s stories of what happens with the pool floaties… or maybe not.)

So, everyone is there… except Tom. Frank, of course, is beside himself and gets everyone else involved in the search, giving me an excuse to write a chapter from everyone’s point of view. Well, just the main characters–though I did think about including Josh. I’m going to have to write a story just for him, aren’t I?

Okay, enough waffling. How do you get this piece of literary magic? Newsletter subscribers get it first–tomorrow, Tuesday, November 12, which is just about bang on a year after Renewing Forever (Frank and Tom’s book) was released. The perfect time for an epilogue story featuring their wedding, don’t you think?

I will make the story available to everyone else by the end of the year–links to be posted on this blog later in December.
